When browsing the net, I stumbled across this tourist website (in German), praising the beauty of PTUJ,....  I must say, I agree with most of the historic comments but would perhaps change a few lines with regards to the entertainment factor. "....am schönsten für mich ist Ptuj..." sagten und schrieben verschiedene große Kenner der Geschichte, der Kunst… Auch für uns ist Ptuj die schönste Stadt. I have fallen in love with those boiled doughy "things" filled with delicious soft cheese. Can't get enough of them. What a shame we can't get any here in London. Ptuj, like many medieval towns, was frequently troubled by fire. The close build up of wooden houses kindled a terrible blaze in 1744 which devastated large parts of the town. No wonder the Ptujans developed a great affinity to St Florian, the patron Saint of chimney sweep and firefighters. A large baroque statue of St Florian (dated: 1745) stands near a naff shoe shop in the Mestni Trg (Town Square), formerly known as Florian Square. I personally prefer another, older statue of Flo which stands on the southern platform of the Castle. All of the above are very new sounding words. No help from previous German, French knowledge, hard work... The good news: All the names of the months are just like in German/English, (apart from March) januar, februar, marec, april, maj, junij, julij, avgust, september, october, november, december

Hočem obiskati Maribor   (I want to visit Maribor) Hočem jesti ribo   (I want to eat fish),    accusative Hočem piti vino   (I want to drink wine)   accusative Nočem piti pivo   (I don't want to drink beer)   accusative Hočem poklicati mojega prijatelja   ( I want to phone my friend)    accusative Nočem iti v mesto ( I don't want to go to town) A good way to learn some infinitives... . .

Zakaj piješ pivo? (why do you drink beer?) Ker mi je všeč (Because I like it) Zakaj piješ Laško? Zakaj ne? Not bad, the Slovenian beer. The two major brands are Lasko and Union. Both belong to the same company these days. Lasko gets my vote, a refreshing little number.....go, Zlatorog ! (think first how many of us) 2 = greva !    or     2+ = gremo ! ... exhausting I have yet to find out why the verb iti in the finite form has become gre-, rather than idem as it is used in other slavic languages. Iti (to go) sing 1. grem 2. greš 3. gre dual 1. greva 2. gresta 3. gresta plural 1. gremo 2. greste 3. gredo/grejo Examples: zdaj grem k zdravniku   =   now I'm going to the doctor iti peš v šolo   =   to walk by foot to school .

Example: Kam greš?  Grem v restavracijo.  Všeč mi je riba.  Od kod je riba?  Riba je iz reke Drave.  (iz = from; reka, f = river), note: iz followed by genitive Grammar: FEMININE:  Grem v restavracijo     Greš v hišo     (restavracija, hiša, f) MASCULIN:  Grem v hotel      Gre na trg    (hotel,trg, m) NEUTRAL: Grem v mesto   (mesto, n)  if  the subject is viewed as static, located in/at a place --> use locative  Kje? Sem na mizi   if the subject is viewed as moving toward a goal --> use accusative Kam? Grem na mizo .
